How to become a guardian home:

What is a Guardian Home?

Our Guardian Home Program allows us to advance our breeding program while prioritizing the happiness, well-being, and quality of life of our dogs. While we would love to keep every dog ourselves, we believe our dogs thrive best in homes where they receive individualized attention, love, and daily companionship.

As a Guardian Home, you provide the permanent, loving home for one of our male breeding dogs while he remains an active part of our program. Upon retirement from breeding and following neutering (performed at our expense), full ownership transfers to the guardian family, and the dog remains your lifelong companion.

Guardian Homes receive a puppy or young adult dog at a reduced adoption fee, rather than the full purchase price, in exchange for participating in the breeding program.

This program ensures our dogs live fulfilling lives as beloved family members while allowing us to responsibly continue our breeding program.

What are some requirements to be a Guardian Home?

  • Only male dogs are offered through our Guardian Home Program
  • Guardian families must live within one (1) hour driving distance of our home to ensure timely access for breeding-related needs.

  1. Teach basic obedience commands including sit, stay, lay down, “no,” quiet, leave it, and proper leash manners using positive reinforcement methods only.
  2. Ensure the dog is fully potty trained and crate trained by 9 months of age, if not already trained.
  3. Keep the dog as an indoor family pet at all times; the dog may not live outdoors.
  4. Avoid exposing the dog to public areas heavily frequented by other dogs (such as dog parks or pet stores) until fully vaccinated (approximately 16 weeks of age).
  5. Properly socialize the dog with both people and other dogs.
  6. Provide appropriate daily exercise and mental stimulation.
  7. Be available to transport the dog to and from the breeder with 24–36 hours’ notice when required.
  8. Maintain open, respectful, and timely communication with the breeder.
  9. Notify the breeder immediately of any significant illness, injury, or medical emergency involving the dog.
  10. Not participate as a guardian home for another breeder involving the same breed(s) while enrolled in our program.
  11. A fenced yard is preferred but not required.
  12. Reside within one hour of the breeder’s home.

These requirements exist to protect the health, safety, and emotional well-being of the dog while ensuring the smooth operation of the breeding program.

What expenses are guardian families responsible for?

Guardian families are responsible for all routine, non-breeding-related expenses, including but not limited to:

  • Quality food, treats, and toys
  • Routine veterinary care not related to breeding
  • Vaccinations, flea/tick prevention, and heartworm prevention
  • Grooming expenses (unless the guardian chooses to groom the dog themselves)

These responsibilities ensure the dog receives consistent, high-quality daily care.

What is the breeder responsible for?

As part of the Guardian Home Program, the breeder agrees to:

  1. Provide a healthy male dog to the guardian family at a reduced adoption fee.
  2. Cover all required health testing related to breeding.
  3. Pay all breeding-related expenses, including but not limited to progesterone testing and semen collection.
  4. Provide education and guidance regarding breeding-related care as needed.
  5. Cover the full cost of neutering once the dog is retired from the breeding program.
  6. Provide ongoing lifetime support for both the dog and the guardian family.
  7. Take the dog back at any time if the guardian family is no longer able to provide care, for any reason.
